PRECAUTIONS TO HELP AVOID
INFECTION
Everyone is susceptible to an
infection, some more than others. Taking good care of your
piercing is the first step to trouble free healing. To help
minimise the risk of infection, always observe the following:
Avoid touching the piercing with
unwashed hands. Avoid oral contact with the piercing, including
your own saliva. Avoid contact with hair, cosmetics, oils,
unclean bedding, etc... Avoid swimming in a pool, lake, ocean,
soaking in dirty bathwater, etc...
Stress, poor diet or illness
can slow the healing process and cause migration of the piercing.
Friction caused by tight or heavy clothing, excessive movement
of the area can cause redness, a hard growth of skin over
the scar [keloids], discharge and rejection/migration.
[Migration is when the body forces
the piece of jewellery to grow out of the body]
SIGNS OF INFECTION
Severe redness and swelling. A sensation of heat at the piercing.
Pain, especially a throbbing or spreading pain. Unusual discharge.
It may be yellowish, green or greyish. Overcleaning, vigorous
cleaning or using a cleanser that is too strong can produce
symptoms very similar to an infection; the skin may be very
tender and appear shiny and there may be a clear discharge.
